Punch & Judy Bakery and P & J Cafe – 38 and 40 West Street, Bridport

The town of Bridport in Dorset – it is the gateway to West Bay and the Jurassic Coast.
This is the Punch & Judy Bakery on West Street in Bridport. Next door is the P & J Cafe. At this point we were looking for a place to have lunch. In the end we went to The Greyhounds (Wetherspoon further down the road near the Town Hall).
At 38 and 40 West Street. Grade II listed.

Probably early Cl8. Colour washed brick. Slate roof. 2 storeys. Eaves cornice.
3 ranges sashes with wide flush frames, 2 with glazing bars. Central door with
moulded frame and 6 flush panels. 2 shopfronts, of which that to No 38 has bakelite
cladding and characteristic Art Deco lettering and handrail. 2 storey red brick
extension to rear.
Nos 24 to 40 (even) form a group.
Listing NGR: SY4643692950
May 2012 is the 350th anniversary of the first mention of Mr Punchin the diary of Samuel Pepys.

Taken during the Big Grin – a celebration marking the ‘birthday’ of Mr Punch. The date has been chosen because Samuel Pepys made an entry in his diary for 9 May 1662, noting the marionette performance of "Signor Bologna" in Covent Garden.
The Big Grin featured a parade of Professors around the piazza, a mass photocall, and then individual performances.
